COLOUR CODES OF India Meteorological Department (IMD) is an agency of the Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Government of India. It is the principal agency responsible for meteorological observations, weather forecasting and seismology.

  • IMD is headquartered in Delhiand operates hundreds of observation stations across India and Antarctica.
  • 6 Regional offices are at Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Nagpur, Guwahati and New Delhi.
  • IMD is also one of the six Regional Specialised Meteorological Centresof the World Meteorological Organisation. It has the responsibility for forecasting, naming and distribution of warnings for tropical cyclones in the Northern Indian Ocean region, including the Malacca Straits, the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf.
  • India Meteorological Department(IMD)  established in 1875 under H.N. Blanford with ancient Indian motto ‘adityat jayate vrishti’ or sun is the cause of rain.

Colour coded warnings are as under.

  1. Yellow alert – chance of low loss but still administration should be careful. Possibility of thunderstorms, strong winds , cold waves and
  2. Orange alert – tells us to be prepared.
  3. Red alert – clear warning and asks for taking action.
  4. Green alert -- No alert
