COPPER PRODUCTION INDIA WORLD FUTURE SCENARIO

COPPER Production METAL OF ELECTRIFICATION & NET ZERO TARGETS

COPPER PRODUCTION PRESENT & FUTURE

COPPER PRODUCTION INDIA WORLD FUTURE:

Copper—the “Metal of electrification”—is essential to all energy transition plans.

  • In the Year 2020 the World Refined Copper Consumption was 24.989 million tonnes whereas World Mine production was 20.634 million tonnes as copper metal & Refined Copper production was 24.51 million tonnes.
  • Copper demand is projected to grow from 25 million metric tons (MMt) today to about 50 MMt by 2035, a record-high level that will be sustained and continue to grow to 53 MMt by 2050. Power and automotive applications will have to be deployed at scale by 2035 in order to meet the 2050 net-zero targets.
  • The initial increase in demand over the coming decade will be particularly challenging. Global refined copper demand is projected to almost double from just over 25 MMt in 2021 to nearly 49 MMt in 2035, with energy transition technologies accounting for about half of the growth in demand. The world has never produced anywhere close to this much copper in such a short time frame.
  • The total consumption of refined copper in the country in 2020 is around 6.60 lakh tones.
  • Current total installed refined copper capacity in the country 10.28 lakh tones.
  • HCL is the only producer of copper ore in the country.

ABOUT COPPER

COPPER PRODUCTION INDIA WORLD FUTURE:

Copper

Use:

  • Copper is highly used in electrical industry for making wires, electric motors, transformers and generators. It is alloyable, malleable and ductile metal.
  • Copper is also mixed with gold to provide strength to jewellery.
  • Alloy of Copper and Zinc is known as Brass while the alloy of Copper and Tin is known as Bronze.

Ores:

  • Its major ores are Sulphide ore (Chalcopyrite, Chalcocite, Bornite), Oxide ores (Cuprite), and Carbonate ores (Machalite and Edurite).
  • The red and brown colored copper is largely used in the manufacturing of electronics goods because it is a good conductor of electricity.

Areas:

  • The Khetri Mines in Rajasthan has been a major copper extracting region since the age of Indus valley civilization.
  • Madhya Pradesh is the largest producer of Copper in the country but in monetary terms Rajasthan is leading producer of Copper as the Copper of highest quality is extracted from Rajasthan.
  • In terms of both copper deposits and production Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jharkhand are respectively first, second and third position.
  • The maximum production of copper ore in India is done by Public Sector Units Hindustan Copper Limited. To meet domestic needs, Copper is imported from countries like USA, Canada etc.

Production:

  • The total annual consumption of refined copper within the country is around 6.6 lakh tonnes during 2020-21, which was equivalent to 4.5% of the country’s requirement in terms of copper metal.
  • The production of copper ore in 2020-21 stood at 5 million tonnes which is 2% lower as compared to previous year.
