TENNIS GOLDEN GRAND SLAMS;


The Grand Slam tournaments, also called majors, are the four most important annual tennis events. They offer the most ranking points, prize money, public and media attention, the greatest strength and size of field, and greater number of "best of" sets for men, which is 5.

  • The Grand Slam calendar consists of the Australian Open in mid January, the French Open (also known as Roland Garros) from around late May to early June, Wimbledon in June–July, and the US Open in August–September(also known as flushing meadows). Each tournament is played over a two-week period.
    1. Australian open - 1st grand slam of the year
    2. US open - last grand slam of the year
  • The Australian and United States tournaments are played on hard courts, the French on clay, and Wimbledon on grass. Wimbledon is the oldest, founded in 1877, followed by the US in 1881, the French in 1891, and the Australian in 1905.
  • The sport of tennis is defined by these four major championships or “the Grand Slams”. Throughout its history, the greatest matches have been played on the sport’s grandest stages. The greatest champions in the sport have also amassed the most number of Grand Slam singles titles.
  • Currently, Novak Djokovich of Serbia having won 24 Grand Slams is highest winner & most successful player in history.

  • Calendar Grand Slam   - If a player wins all 4 grand slams in a calendar year.
  • Calendar Golden Grand Slam - If a player wins all 4 grand slams in a calendar year along with the olympics gold medal in the same year.

No Indian has ever won A Grand Slam in singles but have been successful in duubles and mixed doubles.

  1. Leander Paes has won 18 doubles grand slams and Olympic medal. He won the bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta to become India’s first, and so far, the only medallist in tennis at the Summer Games. However, he earned his place in the Tennis Hall of Fame due to his achievements as a doubles player.

    Paes has eight men’s doubles Grand Slam titles and 10 in mixed doubles. He is one of only three men in tennis history to capture a career Grand Slam in both doubles categories.

  2. Mahesh Bhupathi has won 12 doubles grand slams. Bhupathi is the first Indian tennis player to win a Grand Slam.
  3. Sania won six Grand Slam doubles titles – three each in the women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
  4. Bopanna has played six Grand Slam finals, winning twice and losing four times.

No Indian has ever won A Grand Slam in singles but have been successful in doubles and mixed doubles in both men and women & in fact Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi & Sania Mirza have won career slams(I.E. winning all four Grand Slams in their careers).
