WHITE REVOLUTION CATTLE POPULATION:
The livestock census is conducted periodically (every 5 years) across the country since 1919. 19 such census has been conducted so far and the 20th census was concluded in October 2018.
- Cattle constitute about 94% of livestock population in India. India has the largest cattle population. The total number of cattle, as per census 2018 is 192.49 million.
- West Bengal observed the highest increase of 23%, followed by Telangana (22%). The total number of cattle in the country has shown an increase of 8%. Uttar Pradesh has observed a maximum decrease in cattle population.
- At state level, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have the largest percentage of cattle in the country followed by West Bengal, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. These five states together constitute 44% of the country's total cattle population.
- Buffaloes are an important source of milk supply in India, contributing about 51.1% of the country's total production of milk although they constitute only 20.45% of the country's total livestock.

- Operation Flood in India was launched by National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in 1970 for the promotion of milk trade.
- Cattle constitute about 35.94% of livestock population in India. India has the largest cattle population. The total number of cattle, as per census 2018 is 192.49 million.
- Total milk production in the country during 2021-22 is 221.06 million tonnes.
- In the current year 2021-22, the milk production has registered an annual growth rate of 5.29%.
- Buffaloes are an important source of milk supply in India, contributing about 51.1% of the country's total production of milk although they constitute only 20.45% of the country's total livestock.
- Top five major milk producing States are Rajasthan (15.05%), Uttar Pradesh (14.93%), Madhya Pradesh (8.06%), Gujarat (7.56%) and Andhra Pradesh (6.97%).
- The per-capita availability of milk is 444 gram/dayduring 2021-22 increased by 17 gram/day over previous year.
