GBF Fund & the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

Global Biodiversity Framework Fund:


The Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) Fund was ratified and launched at the Seventh Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), in Vancouver, Canada.

The GBF Fund is uniquely dedicated to support the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, its goals and its targets. It provides an opportunity to,

  • receive funding from all sources,
  • quickly disburse through streamlined procedures,
  • with enhanced access for indigenous peoples and local communities, according to their own priorities.
  • The Fund also provides the opportunity for a greatly enhanced involvement of Multilateral Development Banks and Development Finance Institutes, which will facilitate the mainstreaming of biodiversity necessary to implement the Framework.

GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP), through this programme it has provided support to nearly 27,000 civil society and community initiatives in 136 countries. In June 2022, donors to the GEF pledged a record $5.33 billion in support for its latest four-year replenishment cycle, which runs until June 2026.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF),

  • established on the eve of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, is a catalyst for action on the environment — and much more.
  • Through its strategic investments, the GEF works with partners to tackle the planet’s biggest environmental issues.

The GEF is

  • A UNIQUE PARTNERSHIPof 18 agencies — including United Nations agencies, multilateral development banks, national entities and international NGOs —
  • working with 183 countries to address the world’s most challenging environmental issues. The GEF has a large network of civil society organizations, works closely with the private sector around the world, and receives continuous inputs from an independent evaluation office and a world-class scientific panel.
  • It is a FINANCIAL MECHANISMfor five major international environmental conventions: the Minamata Convention on Mercury, the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD), the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
  • GEF is also an INNOVATOR AND CATALYSTthat supports multi-stakeholder alliances to preserve threatened ecosystems on land and in the oceans, build greener cities, boost food security and promote clean energy for a more prosperous, climate-resilient world; leveraging $5.2 in additional financing for every $1 invested.
