Coal
- India has 4th largest reserves of coal and holds about 315 billion ton of world's proven reserves. India is the
- Coal is the main source of energy in the country and accounts for 67% of the energy requirement of the country.
- India imports good quality coal from Australia.
Petroleum
- India is the 3rd oil consuming nation in the world as it consumes 230 million tonnes of oil and oil products per year(2022-23).
- The estimated reserves of crude oil in India in 2018 stood 49 million tones, ranking 24th in the world and accounting for about 0.3% of the world's total oil reserves.
- India import 82% of its oil needs and aims to bring it down to 67% by 2022 by replacing it with local exploration, renewable energy and ethanol fuel.
Nuclear Energy
- The present installed nuclear power capacity is set to increase from 6,780 MW to 22,480 MW by 2031 with 11 indigenous pressurised heavy water reactors at a total cost of Rs.1,05,000 crore under various stages of completion.
- India is at 6th position in the Atomic Energy State in the World but still the contribution of atomic energy in total electricity production is only 2.8% .
Hydel Energy
- Total hydro-electric potential of India is estimated at 148 GW( 1 GW = 1000 MW) but only 30% of its total potential is harnessed.
- India is the 5th largest producer of hydroelectricity power in world, amounting to 50,000 MW.
Solar Energy
- The country’s solar installed capacity reached 72 GW in January, 2024, accounting for 16.5% total Installed capacity.
Wind Energy
- India is the fourth largest wind power producer in the world after China USA and Germany.
- India's wind power potential at hub height of 120 meters is 695 GW India's wind power installed capacity is about 43 GW (as on march 2023.
- Wind power accounts for 10% of installed capacity.
