ISRAEL GAZA CONFLICT SPILLS INTO LEBANON AFTER YEMEN
Borders between Israel and Lebanon have been under intensified attack by Hezbollah & IDF(Israeli defence forces).
The border between Israel and Lebanon, known as the "Blue Line," was set by the United Nations in 2000 after Israel withdrew its military from southern Lebanon.
It's not an official international border but a demarcation line.
Originally, it was the boundary established by Britain and France in the 1920s, between Lebanon, Syria and Palestine.
Hezbollah is a Shia Islamist political party and militant group based in Lebanon supported byIran. It emerged in the 1980s as a response to the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon. It is also designated as a terrorist organisation by several countries, including the United States and Israel.
Israel withdrew from Lebanon in 2000.
Maritime dispute - In 2010, Israel discovered massive deposits of natural gas off its coast in the Mediterranean Sea. While Israel's find is within its territorial exclusive economic zone, the dispute stems from the possibility that the gas field spans to Lebanon's boundary. A general principle in such a situation is the rule of capture where each side is permitted to lift as much as it can on its side. Israel has already started exploration and construction on its side, while Lebanese authorities have not yet officially demarcated its exclusive economic zone or initiated a process of attracting bids for exploration rights. Israel and Lebanon also are in conflict over sharing of Natural gas found in Mediterranean sea.
Hezbollah
Hezbollah was established by Lebanese clerics primarily to fight the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. It adopted the model set out by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini after the Iranian Revolution in 1979.
- Since then, close ties have developed between Iran and Hezbollah. The organization was created with the support of 1,500 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) instructors, and aggregated a variety of Lebanese Shia groups into a unified organization.
- Hezbollah also participated in the 1985–2000 South Lebanon conflict against the South Lebanon Army (SLA) and Israel, fighting the latter during 2006 Lebanon War as well. During the 1990s, Hezbollah also organized volunteers to fight for the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Bosnian War.
- Hezbollah has been described as a "state within a state",and has grown into an organization with seats in the Lebanese government, a radio and a satellite TV station, social services and large-scale military deployment of fighters beyond Lebanon's borders.
- Since 1990, it has participated in Lebanese politics, in a process which is described as the Lebanonization of Hezbollah, and it later participated in the government of Lebanon and joined political alliances.
- In the 2018 Lebanese general election, Hezbollah held 12 seats and its alliance won the election by gaining 70 out of 128 seats in the Parliament of Lebanon.
