India's rank on the World Economic Forum's Travel & Tourism Development Index 2024 has risen to 39th place, with global tourism activities returning to pre-pandemic levels
- While the US topped the list, India is ranked highest in South Asia and among the lower-middle-income economies.
- India was ranked 54th in the previously published index in 2021, though changes made to the index parameters limit its comparability to earlier years.
- The index, prepared in collaboration with the University of Surrey, showed India is highly price-competitive (18th) and boasts competitive Air Transport (26th) and Ground and Port (25th) infrastructure. In particular, India's strong Natural (6th), Cultural (9th) and Non-Leisure (9th) Resources help drive travel, and the country is only one of three to score in the top 10 for all the resource pillars
The tourism industry is the world's largest and most complicated industry and this complexity is because of its strong relation with social, cultural, political and environment background.

The last Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report was published in 2019.

The World Economic Forum’s (WEF) ranked India 54th position (down from 46th in 2019) with a score of 4.1 in its Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021, but still, India remains the top performer in South Asia. Japan has topped (1) the global chart and the bottom position (117) is occupied by the country Chad.
About the WEF’s Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021
The WEF’s Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021 is a direct evolution of the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index, which has been published biennially for the past 15 years. The Index assesses 117 economies, based on 5 subindexes, 17 pillars and 112 individual indicators, distributed among the different pillars.

- Travel and Tourism Policy and Enabling Conditions
- Infrastructure
- Travel and Tourism Demand Drivers
- Travel and Tourism Sustainability
As per the Ministry of Tourism, Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) the period January-October 2023 were 7.2 million as compared to 4.6 million in January-October 2022. it is still much below the pre pandemic level of 10.5 million arrivals in 2019.
TOP 5 ENTRY POINTS - The percentage share of Foreign Tourist Arrivals in India among the top 5 entry points was highest at Delhi Airport (34.74%) followed by Mumbai Airport (14.75%), Haridaspur Land Check Post (9.03%), Chennai Airport (7.05%), Bengaluru Airport (5.71%).
TOP 5 SOURCES The percentage share of Foreign Tourist Arrivals in India during October 2023 among the top 5 source countries was highest from Bangladesh (21.41%), followed by USA (15.65%), UK (11.27%), Australia (4.38%) and Canada (3.81%).
